Paula Sussman, a gifted painter from a young age, embarked on a journey of artistic exploration that has shaped her life and career. After completing high school, she pursued an associate degree at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City. However, feeling a deep longing for formal art education, she set her sights on Florence, Italy, where she studied art and Italian with FSU. Determined to further her artistic skills, Paula obtained her BFA from the University of Pennsylvania and a painting certificate from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1987. Subsequently, she married and relocated to various places, including New York City and Bozeman, Montana, where her connection with the breathtaking landscapes of the region exponentially ignited her love for landscape painting. During her time in Bozeman, Paula became actively involved with The Emerson Cultural Center, which further nurtured her passion for the arts. However, life took an unexpected turn when her husband lost his job, compelling Paula to work in the field of Ophthalmology for 15 years to make ends meet. Eventually, her husband found a new job in San Antonio, Texas, which brought a new vibrancy and vividness to her artwork. In her artistic journey, Paula faced a significant setback when an unethical architect ruined the art studio of her dreams during a building project. This unfortunate experience, coupled with other challenges, eventually led to the dissolution of her 34-year marriage. Despite these hardships, Paula's resilience and talent prevailed, and she achieved a remarkable milestone in her career, winning the prestigious Onderdonk Award in 2020. As a mother, Paula takes immense pride in her two adult daughters. Seeking a fresh start, she recently relocated to New Mexico in the winter of 2022, where she has joined the Corrales Art Society, immersing herself in the vibrant artistic community of the region. Paula Sussman's artistic journey is a testament to her unwavering passion for painting, her ability to overcome adversity, and her dedication to creating captivating artwork that reflects her unique perspective on the world.
